Case Studies: Usage and Needs Assessment
Telecommunications/Data Company
Portland Research Group managed and conducted a multi-faceted study for a telecommunications company to assess the usage and needs of organizations in Maine for new technology that was being developed. In addition, perceptions of the client and its competitors were evaluated to determine their image and position in the market. The study was completed in sections. Each section provided input for the following phase. Final results of the research were presented to the client’s executive team.
The research consisted of several qualitative and quantitative techniques. Each effort took place in the three major markets of Maine – Greater Portland, Lewiston/ Auburn, and Greater Bangor. The specific sections are listed below:
- Six in-depth personal interviews with corporate IT managers
- Three focus groups with IT personnel
- Telephone interviews (n=150) with primary decision-makers for Internet Usage, computers and/or networks
- Telephone interviews (n=100) among computer and/or network consultants
A comprehensive report was prepared following the completion of each section. Actual quotes were used for the presentation of findings from the qualitative research (in-depth personal interviews and focus groups) and charts and tables were used to clarify findings in the two quantitative efforts. Results from all four sections were integrated to produce the presentation given to the client’s executive team.
