  • Managing Sample Bias
  • research tip
Most research uses a random sampling design to reduce costs and promote accuracy. A good random sample can tell you the dynamics of a million consumers from the opinions of only 400 (given an acceptable level of error).

There are, however, a few things that can compromise the accuracy of your generalizations. One of these is called "non-response bias" and your research provider should have a technique to manage it. Non-response bias simply means, "Is there something about those we didn't hear from that, if we had heard from, would have changed the findings?"

Sometimes this can be addressed with a simple statistical comparison between the original sample and the final data set. Other times, a more involved process is required. Either way, some measure of potential non-response bias should be a part of any quality research project.
